About

Lactobacillus casei is a widely consumed probiotic species found in fermented dairy products. It supports immune function by enhancing phagocytic activity of macrophages and may help modulate the Th1/Th2 immune balance. Research suggests the Shirota strain (found in Yakult) may help support digestive comfort and antibiotic-associated digestive resilience.

How It Works

Enhances phagocytic activity of macrophages and modulates Th1/Th2 immune balance; produces organic acids (lactic, acetic) inhibiting enteric pathogens; supports colonization resistance against pathogenic bacteria; stimulates secretory IgA production at mucosal surfaces.

Side Effects

  • Mild gas and bloating during initial use
  • Occasional loose stools
  • Rare dairy-related reactions in lactose-sensitive individuals
  • Very rare: bacteremia in immunocompromised individuals

Drug & Supplement Interactions

  • Antibiotics (may reduce probiotic viability; space dosing 2 hours apart)
  • Immunosuppressants (theoretical risk in immunocompromised patients)
