About

Partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG) is a water-soluble, non-gelling fiber that is exceptionally well-tolerated compared to other fiber supplements. Research suggests it may help normalize both constipation and diarrhea, making it uniquely suited for mixed bowel habit conditions. PHGG supports the growth of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species and is fermented primarily to butyrate without causing the excess gas associated with many other fibers.

How It Works

Water-soluble non-gelling fiber fermented to butyrate in the colon; normalizes both constipation and diarrhea (bidirectional regulatory effect); supports Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus growth without causing excess gas; low viscosity helps reduce the bloating common with other fiber supplements.

Evidence For Conditions

Side Effects

  • Minimal gas and bloating (significantly less than other fibers)
  • Mild abdominal discomfort in rare cases
  • Loose stools at very high doses

Drug & Supplement Interactions

  • May slow absorption of some medications (space 1-2 hours)
  • Diabetes medications (may modestly affect blood glucose)
