Inulin
prebioticAlso known as: Chicory Root Fiber, Chicory Inulin, FOS-Inulin, Orafti
About
Inulin is a naturally occurring fructan-type prebiotic fiber that selectively nourishes beneficial Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species in the colon. Research suggests it may help increase stool frequency and improve stool consistency. Its fermentation produces short-chain fatty acids including acetate, propionate, and butyrate, which support colonic health and may enhance mineral absorption.
How It Works
Selectively fermented by Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species producing acetate, propionate, and butyrate SCFAs; increases fecal Bifidobacterium counts by 1-2 log (bifidogenic effect); lowers colonic pH inhibiting pathogen growth; enhances calcium and magnesium absorption in the colon.

Side Effects
- Gas and bloating (common at higher doses; start with 3-5 g/day and titrate up)
- Abdominal cramping
- Flatulence
- Loose stools at very high doses
Drug & Supplement Interactions
- May enhance absorption of calcium and magnesium (beneficial interaction)
- Blood sugar-lowering medications (inulin may modestly reduce blood glucose)
- Other FODMAPs (cumulative fermentation may worsen symptoms in sensitive individuals)
