About

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are short-chain fructans that serve as a selective food source for beneficial gut bacteria, particularly Bifidobacterium species. Research suggests FOS supplementation may increase fecal bifidobacterial counts by 1-2 log within two weeks. FOS supports butyrate production via cross-feeding mechanisms, where primary degraders share metabolites with butyrate-producing bacteria.

How It Works

Short-chain fructan selectively fermented by beneficial Bifidobacteria via fructan beta-fructosidases; increases fecal bifidobacterial counts by 1-2 log within 2 weeks; produces butyrate via cross-feeding with Faecalibacterium prausnitzii; lowers colonic pH creating unfavorable environment for pathogens.

Evidence For Conditions

Condition Grade Studies Participants
Chronic Constipation C 4 350 View →
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) D 2 150 View →

Side Effects

  • Gas, bloating, and flatulence (dose-dependent; more common above 10 g/day)
  • Abdominal cramping at higher doses
  • May worsen IBS symptoms in FODMAP-sensitive individuals
  • Loose stools at excessive doses

Drug & Supplement Interactions

  • Other FODMAPs (cumulative fermentation effect in sensitive individuals)
  • Blood sugar-lowering medications (FOS may modestly affect glycemic response)
  • Calcium supplements (FOS may enhance calcium absorption)
