L-Theanine

An amino acid from tea leaves that promotes relaxation without sedation.

L-theanine is a non-protein amino acid found primarily in tea leaves (Camellia sinensis) that crosses the blood-brain barrier and promotes alpha brain wave activity associated with a state of calm alertness. It increases GABA, serotonin, and dopamine levels in the brain while modulating glutamate excitotoxicity. Unlike sedative compounds, L-theanine promotes relaxation without drowsiness. Clinical studies demonstrate benefits for stress-related anxiety, sleep quality, and cognitive performance, particularly when combined with caffeine for synergistic focus enhancement. Typical doses range from 100-400 mg.
